What is Scagliola?

Scagliola is a captivating decorative technique that mimics natural marble or other precious stones in an artful and innovative way. Utilised in the creation of stunning architectural elements, furniture, and ornamental pieces, scagliola involves creating intricate patterns and designs using a mixture of gypsum, glue, and natural pigments. The resulting material is then polished by hand to create a marble-like finish that is both visually stunning and durable. Originally developed during the 17th century, scagliola quickly gained popularity as an alternative to using actual marble in architectural and interior design projects. With its versatility and ability to be moulded into various shapes and colours, scagliola has become a favoured choice for creating custom-made, one-of-a-kind pieces in both traditional and contemporary settings. This age-old craft requires exceptional skill and precision to manipulate the plaster to achieve a seamless and lustrous finish. The resulting creations boast a timeless elegance and opulence, making scagliola a cherished and revered art form in the realm of interior design and craftsmanship.
